A Year of Poems – Day 43

Wordsworth was right
it is getting and spending
and spending on getting
until the getting gets good.

It is anachronistic now
for sidewalks to extend
to the front door.
The only connection
from the world
to our homes
is the driveway
which we fill
till no one but us
can get through.

No one intended to do this.
It is simply what another poet meant
when he said that the world was bleared
by trade and smeared by toil.

Has the world been too much with us
or have we been too much with the world?
